I was born during the famous Somali civil war, growing up in post-conflict Somalia was a very challenging experience. Since childhood, I wanted to find answers to big questions like what was wrong with my country and why it is so difficult to find a sense of lasting peace? My interest in these social issues also encouraged me to be active in the local youth and community organizations, as a result of that I was awarded a full scholarship to study undergraduate in Political science and international relations in Turkey. After I finished, I also got a master’s scholarship in Turkey and when I finished my master’s program I worked as a research assistant and teaching fellow at the same university I graduated from. After I worked for a year, I returned to Somalia and started working as a land dispute officer at Garowe municipality where I was able to transfer the knowledge and experiences I have obtained from my years in Turkey. After a year when I returned to Somalia, I won the prestigious Chevening scholarship to pursue my second master’s in Conflict Resolution and Peace Studies at Lancaster University in the United Kingdom where I live now.
Apart from my academic work, I have had the privilege to attend several regional and international conferences in different places, meeting with motivated young people and learning from experienced passionate scholars taught me a lot. Additionally, I speak four languages, English, Turkish, Somali, and Arabic. I am also a part-time YouTuber I use my social media platforms to promote the value of education by showing and teaching young Somalis tools, techniques, and information that can change their lives.
