I hail from the outskirts of Punjab, i.e. Muzzafar-Garh; one of the rural areas in Pakistan, which is considerably under-developed where the poor living conditions are exacerbated by extremely restrictive social norms. Despite that I went to University, I chose to join Software Engineering at the University of Punjab, because I had already found my passion for programming and software development in high school. After graduation; I was hired by a multinational firm Abacus Consulting as a Software Engineer.
During my university years I served as a member of Computer Society and Blood Donation Society. 1n Dec 2021, I was selected as a young leader at United People Global (UPG) in a leadership program where I am working on my peace building idea to decrease the ratio of anxiety and depression from society.
In Jan 2022, I participated in Unleash Mental Health Hacks Europe where I along with my team presented an idea on peace building through decreasing the anxiety in children of 10-19 years and we stood up 3rd in the list and won 1000 USD for that achievement.
One aspect I have learnt to use to my advantage and my community is fostering social capital. I have learnt to bond, build good bridges, and invest in individuals. And so, this contributed to my desire to observe, assess and develop solutions to issues and challenges related to emotional and verbal violence in my community. In my community, I have witnessed several cases of youths who have undergone bullying through verbal threats or other tactics that make them feel threatened, inferior, ashamed, or degraded. This has not only affected their self-esteem at school, work and other social services but also caused psychological defects in their wellbeing.
I formed a network of team members who carry out peer-to-peer mentorship to youths who have been emotionally abused by strengthening the victim’s resolve to enable them to believe that they are not alone in recovering from the abuse. I have been volunteering on different mental health issues to help youths in my community overcome emotional and verbal abuse. I took some basic courses on Psychology, and listening skills, and offered community-based programs for over 50 youths in my community.
I have longing to work on United Nations Sustainable Development Goals especially SDG No 3 (Good Health and Well-Being) and SDG NO 4 (Quality Education). In future I plan to take more initiatives to meet the UN agenda of 2030.
