I am a young global leader seeking to make a positive impact in our society. Leota King is a young leader seeking to make a positive impact in our society. She has been working with young people for more than 12 years and her involvement with Youth development spans various spheres. Leota is an active member of the Global Shaper Community – Georgetown Hub which is an initiative of the World Economic Forum, that is led by young people who have leadership potential and a drive to make a difference in their communities through action oriented projects. The Hub has several projects every year that aids in promoting better education, gender equality, peacebuilding among others. Additionally, she has been serving as a Youth Leader at her local church for the past 8 years and is also a part of the Assembly of God Sectional Youth Ministry Committee. She has spearheaded the planning and execution of several initiatives such as Youth Conferences, Debate competitions and Sport Activities in an effort to empower youth and bring a sense of cohesion amount young people. In 2018, Leota attended the Faith in the Commonwealth Training which equipped Youth Leaders from the Caribbean with the skills and knowledge to further assist the drive to empower youth, build respect and understanding and promote peacebuilding. After that encounter, she has embarked on a personal project, in collaboration with a few other dynamic young people, known as the ‘Protect your Peace’ that targets the youth at the Juvenile Holding Centre in Guyana. This project is aimed at teaching youths in conflict with the law coping mechanisms and strategies in dealing with conflict, to reduce recidivism and promote reintegration into society. The project is two-fold where there is the facilitation of Capacity Building sessions and Vocational Skills training. From this initiative, Leota and her project team hopes that the youths, once released, will be able to utilize the skills gained to provide an income for themselves and as a positive alternative to crime and violence. Currently, Leota is the Monitoring and Evaluation Officer of the Community, Family & Youth Resilience Program (CFYR) in Guyana. She finds pleasure in helping others develop and hopes to continue to work in social development and volunteerism as the opportunity arises.
