Kiran Jivnani is a 2019 graduate of Northeastern University where she graduated as a part of the Honors College and a recipient of the Northeastern University International Scholars Award. She is a member of Alpha Phi Sigma and was the 2019 Northeastern University Chapter President of the organization.

Kiran is a passionate advocate for climate change, sustainable development, migration and the role that gender and youth play in these sectors. Her interests in advocacy started quite unintentionally in college. In September 2017, Kiran witnessed Hurricane Irma destroying her home, the Caribbean island of Sint. Maarten. In an effort to focus on something positive in the aftermath of something so terrible, she joined the Northeastern University (NEU) chapter of Strong Women Strong Girls (SWSG). SWSG is a nonprofit that champions the ambitions and potential of girls and women by connecting three generations through mentorship, thus supporting the next generation of strong, loud, and proud female leaders. Within a year of joining and mentoring young leaders with SWSG in the Boston area, Kiran joined the e-board of the Northeastern Chapter as the Co-Social Media Coordinator.

Her work within SWSG earned her a spot as a 2018 United Nations Academic Impact and Millennium Campus Network (MCN) Millennium Fellow where she worked on UN SDGs 4 and 5. Kiran quickly became a key member of the Fellowship and went on the volunteer with MCN as the 2019 Millennium Fellowship Admissions Committee Area Team Lead for Europe and the Middle East. In this role, she managed a small team to promote the Fellowship by reviewing incoming applications and ensuring consistent standards for acceptance.

Upon graduation, she worked with the Millennium Campus Network as the program coordinator for the United Nations Academic Impact and MCN Millennium Fellowship. As an alumna, Kiran had valuable insight on how to facilitate the Fellowship. In this role, she managed student leaders from around the world by offering mentorship on SDG-based projects and general project management support. She further expanded organizational impact by creating the MCN Blog Page and documenting Millennium Fellowship projects that have created momentous levels of positive social change. All posts on the blog page have been researched, edited, and published by her. She also assisted with co-developing and implementing Fellowship lessons and trainings, managing communications, and organizing the Millennium Fellowship Webinar Series through which Millennium Fellows are given the chance to engage in intergenerational dialogue with prominent figures in social impact such as Jameela Jamil, Paul Polman, and Aya Chebbi. She continues to volunteer with the Millennium Fellowship.

Working with the Millennium Fellowship made Kiran realize her interest. in policy work. In January 2020 she joined the Office of Member of European Parliament (MEP) Miriam Dalli as a trainee. In March 2020, she was promoted to the role of Accredited Parliamentary Assistant for MEP Dalli. Kiran currently works for MEP Miriam Dalli on policy issues related to the European Parliament ENVI Committee (Environment, Public Health and Food Safety) and ITRE Committee (Industry, Research and Energy). Through this job, Kiran has realized that climate change is the primary threat that our society faces and the importance of youth leadership in climate action. She firmly believes that climate change is impacting every other major problem area that our world faces and thus has made this policy area her primary one. She is currently writing an article on Climate Change and its Impact on Small Caribbean Island Nations like her own for the United Nations Sustainable Development Fund. She hopes to continue working on climate change policy in the future and gain more opportunities to publish her research and thoughts on this topic in the near future.

Outside of advocacy and policy work, Kiran has varying interests. She loves to travel and has explored over 20 countries. She has done two summer study abroad programs in Spain and London through her university. She is also an avid photographer and videographer and has documented her travels thoroughly. Further, she continuously challenges herself by stepping out of her comfort zone. In 2014, she was the winner of the Miss India-Sint. Maarten pageant and went on to represent her island in the Miss India Worldwide Pageant in Dubai.
