My name is Khadija Harmouche. I work as a Public Health Advisor with NYC Health & Hospitals, COVID-19 Department. I assess clients’ service needs; provide education and risk reduction information; I educate my community about the risk of COVID-19 and how as New Yorkers; we all have the responsibility to keep our state safe. I began my work at Goodwill Industries of NY & NJ in 2015 as a volunteer in the Adult ESL classroom. As an immigrant, I understand how people struggle to learn English when they first come to the US. I was able to provide outreach services to the community to establish and encourage potential and continuing noncredit student participation in the ESL programs; served as an advocate for potential students and created an environment of trust between them, school, and staff. I have helped other immigrants applying for citizenship, kept track of documents, status of their case, and helped them study for the citizenship test. I created mock interviews where I acted as the interviewer for students, and I was always trying to find the best way to increase their confidence using English. In 2016, I helped 14 students pass their citizenship test on the first try. In the last 4 years I have helped more than 50 immigrants with their citizenship application. In addition to English language volunteering, I have also taught myself how to develop curriculums for Arabic language teaching. I have researched Montessori multilingual teaching methods in order to run a private school in Arabic which has operated on the weekends in New York City for 3 years. I did workshops with Arabic language teachers in how to maximize student learning using our curriculum. We also offer summer programs, and I have led coordination of marketing and transportation for the Al-Aqsa Islamic school at Al-Farouq Mosque. Through this work, I have increased student enrollment from 30-40 students in 2015 to nearly 200 students in the current academic year. I am very passionate about strengthening and empowering Arab immigrants as well as all immigrants. I volunteered at the Arab American Association of NY on 2015, where I was able to meet with folks in their community, and tried to solve their problem (Resume, pre-screening for an interview, Employment, Recertification for: Public Assistance, Food Stamp, Medicaid, as well helped them to translate as needed) I also worked as a Civic Engagement Fellow with the Arab American Association of NY during the election of 2016, I organized an entire field program to reach numeric goals, including attending to business, churches, and community events; concerts and other promotional activities, I also organized events or Early Vote Action, as well as a Get Out The Vote (GOTV) operation. I greatly enjoy serving and volunteering in schools as much as I can, I was a member of PTA (Parent Teacher Association) at the Sheepshead Bay School P.S.52. I created a better connection between parents, school, and community, by using my language skills and provided assistance in translation, for both parents and school staff. I advocate for higher education as well other fun activities for the students such as music, dance, drama, ect., as a PTA member, my goal is to make every child’s potential a reality by engaging and empowering families and communities to advocate for all children. In 2017, I worked as a Community Service Specialist with FedCap (WeCare Program) where I was able to develop new non-profit Community Service assignments appropriate for WeCARE clients, and trained designated on-site supervisors where I matched clients with Community Service Assignments, based on the results of their biopsychosocial assessment, diagnostic vocational evaluation, individualized plan of employment, and special accommodation needs. Then, I worked As a Vocational Rehabilitation Services case manager. I worked very closely with people who are referred from the HRA job Center who have some barriers such as: mental Health, Physical health, Substance use, ect. During the first meeting we discussed the result of their Clinical Assessment and explained how they will be engaged in the VRS Track Activities, before starting any activities we assist with mitigating barriers to employment, such as housing, childcare and transportation challenges. I provide case management, coaching, and counseling related to customer pursuit activities and goals. I work one-on-one with clients to help them carry out a successful job search, gain employment, and be retained in employment.
