Janet Kiprono is a young lady from Nakuru County, Kenya, who was born and raised in the rural villages of Kapkures. She is the fifth child in a family of seven. She is currently pursuing her master’s degree (chemical engineering) at Vaal University of Technology in the Republic of South Africa. She has been passionate about environmental protection since she was a child. Her desire to reduce environmental pollution caused by greenhouse gas emissions has led her to conduct biofuel research. She developed a novel method of producing biodiesel from waste cooking oil using phosphate rock, which was published in the journal of climate and environmental technologies. Her second passion is promoting peace among communities in conflict and war zones. She witnessed the negative consequences of her country’s post-election violence, which resulted in the deaths of some of her friends and neighbors. Since then, she has been a peace activist. Because of this newfound interest, she decided to enroll in a UNESCO course on social emotional learning for youth waging war to learn more about peace and conflict resolution skills. She completed the course and received a certificate in conflict resolution. Janet volunteered with the Kenyatta University Female Students Association (KUFFEST) during her undergraduate studies, where she received training and experience in community development projects. During this time, she and the club members would travel to conflict-affected areas such as refugee camps to speak with victims about the importance of peace. Aside from these, she is deeply committed to assisting and mentoring young boys and girls in educational matters. She has started a tutoring program in her village to help these children learn math and science. Her interests include hiking, dancing, and cycling. Her vision is to see Africa negative narratives change for better through her change maker mindset. She is an Alumni of Young African Leaders Initiative RLC-EA cohort 47 program.
