I am a medical Doctor, working in the field of public health and development. My areas of interest are the sexual and reproductive rights of women, Prevention of Gender-based violence, and Maternal and child health.
I graduated as a doctor in 2017, after which I went for my service year. At the tail end of my service year, I started volunteering for a Non-Governmental Organization that provides care and treatment for people living with HIV.
I had always had the dream of working in development, so I decided to volunteer to gain experience. I worked as a Case Manager, providing counseling and testing services to young people and ensuring that People Living with HIV were placed on treatment.
I organized outreaches where young people were provided HIV Testing and counseling services, vaccination campaigns and deworming medications. I also facilitated training for youth leaders within the community leveraging their expertise and the trust the community has in them as leaders to promote good hygiene, sanitation and positive behavioral messaging. This led to a reduction in new HIV infections by 20% compared to the previous year.
Currently I work with another NGO that also caters to People Living with HIV but with a focus on priority populations- Adolescent Girls, Young Women and Children, working within the slums to provide risk reduction and a source of livelihood for vulnerable women. Over the last 6 months we were able to admit 60 girls and young women aged between 16-24 years to our STEM hub to equip the with digital literacy skills (coding, data analysis, graphic design and video editing) this goes towards bridging the gender gap in technology and equipping young girls with 21st century skills to enable them find their place in a fast-moving world.
