Mongolia

Since high school, I have been very interested in various areas such as equality, health promotion, and climate change. During medical school, I was involved in several clubs and activities that dealt with women’s rights and equality. I organized fundraisers for women affected by domestic violence, developed digital content and lectures to raise awareness, and participated in peaceful protests. I can proudly say that I was an active and valuable member of the NGO “Women For Change.” After graduating from medical school, I moved to Taiwan to pursue a master’s degree in public health, and engaged in interdisciplinary activities along the way. For example, I volunteered to teach English to elementary school students in remote areas and organized an oral health promotion for locals that included a demonstration of proper oral hygiene and a basic dental health assessment. In addition, a course on climate change and its impact on health inspired me to learn about the situation in Mongolia. Together with an American doctoral student and her funding from National Geographic, I had the opportunity to interview herders, local mayors, and meteorologists living 500 kilometers from the city and get their perspectives on the effects of climate change, how it is affecting the long-standing nomadic pastoralist culture, and how it is leading to increased migration to urban areas. This qualitative study was an enriching experience and truly took me out of my comfort zone, as I believed the study would shed light on current issues and my desire to help herders and understand the real world impacts of climate change was meaningful. I currently work as a lecturer in epidemiology at the largest and oldest medical university in our country, the Mongolian National University of Medical Sciences. I have also taken on several projects dealing with COVID-19 and the prevalence of hepatitis B and C.
