Namibia

I was born in Namibia to a relatively stable family. My mother was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes a few years before I was born. This has created some challenges in our family life, yet it taught me how to operate calmly when in a stressful situation (such as assisting someone who’s getting a seizure.) I was interested in arts and music from a young age, thus I attended an after school arts program from the age of 8 up until I was 17. Additionally, I have been playing the guitar for 8 years.

I started taking an interest in social issues as well as in local politics when I was 16. The main cause for the shift in interests came from joining my schools debating union. The union was comprised of mainly black students in my school, which is situated in a predominantly white neighbourhood in my city. Thus it has a larger white community than any other race. I started to recognise the segregation in my community, which stemmed from strained racial relations during apartheid. Thus I became an activist for racial equality in my community. Due to my new found passion, I started to join more and more community upliftment initiatives. Additionally, I started to join more extra mural activities such as Public speaking and Model United Nations (Which my delegation won “best delegation” in 2018) in order to equip myself with the necessary skill set to be a more effective activist and advocate for peace and equality in my community. I’m also involved in multiple community upliftment programmes hosted by the university which I attend. I frequently partake in reproductive rights protests as well as in other social welfare activism. In 2020 I became the chief administrative officer for Nūkhoe Pride, a multi-disiplinary organisation who equips its constituents with the necessary skills to become better activists (such as public speaking, writing etc.)

Currently, I’m a psychology and anthropology major with the hopes of becoming a foreign correspondent, reporting on human rights crises in the world. I was inspired by the likes of Marie Colvin, Paul Conroy and Rémi Ochlik to pursue a profession in humanitarian focused work.
