Peace: An the Act of giving

According to the World Bank Group in 2024, approximately 700 million people worldwide were living on less than $2.15 per day, falling below the extreme poverty line. This alarming statistic is most prevalent in regions such as Sub-Saharan Africa particularly in conflict-affected areas, and rural communities. Poverty not only perpetuates conflict and violence but also hinders sustainable development by hindering infrastructure, displacing communities, and destabilizing economies. Therefore, promoting global peace is crucial for poverty reduction and sustainable progress.
Many of the world’s poorest individuals lack access to basic necessities like electricity and clean water, leading to malnutrition and poor health. Additionally, limited educational and employment opportunities further trap individuals in poverty, hindering their ability to secure stable, well-paying jobs. This perpetuates a cycle of financial struggle, making it challenging for individuals to provide for themselves and their families.
Furthermore, poverty is often accompanied by social isolation and stigma. Those living in poverty may face discrimination and societal judgment, which can marginalize them and impede their access to support and resources. This isolation can lead to feelings of hopelessness, making it difficult for individuals to seek assistance and improve their circumstances. Addressing the social stigma associated with poverty is crucial in creating a more inclusive and supportive environment for those in need.
One effective approach to addressing both global peace and poverty is through the act of giving. Giving is a powerful form of peace that can have a significant impact. Scholars such as Mustafa, Jamshed, Nawaz, and Arslan (2023) have long viewed peace as an external concept, often defined by the absence of violent conflict and the presence of respect and understanding among individuals and communities. In my opinion, Peace is internal. Individuals always facing external factors that interfere with the internal development promoting external negativities such as wars, conflicts, disintegration in economic, social and political life.
Giving is a profound and impactful gesture that has the ability to mend relationships and cultivate harmony in a variety of circumstances. Whether it be within personal connections, communities, or among nations, extending an olive branch can showcase a willingness to resolve conflicts and nurture reconciliation. It takes humility, empathy, and an open heart to reach out to others with the intention of making amends and healing wounds.
The hand of giving can take many forms, such as donating money or resources to organizations dedicated to combating poverty, providing essential necessities like food, clothing, and water, volunteering time to support community development initiatives, engaging with children, visiting the elderly, or advocating for policies that promote peace and social justice. When individuals and communities join forces to give back, they not only address immediate needs but also cultivate a sense of unity and collaboration that can fortify societies.
Furthermore, giving possesses the ability to transcend boundaries and bring together individuals from diverse backgrounds and cultures in a shared endeavour to construct a fairer and more peaceful world. By acknowledging our common humanity and understanding the interconnectedness of our global community, we can work together to create a more just and sustainable future for all. In this manner, giving evolves beyond mere charity; it transforms into a potent instrument for constructing bridges, fostering comprehension, and advancing enduring peace and prosperity for future generations.
