In a dynamic continuation of peace-driven initiatives, Global Peace Chain (GPC) Ambassador Lerato Maris from South Africa expanded her “Peace by Dialogue” campaign with a creative twist, blending cultural heritage with peace education. The recent Peace by Dialogue X Heritage Day event at Tsakane Mega Primary-High School (Ex22) brought together young learners under the shared mission of celebrating diversity and promoting peace through understanding.
The event was designed to highlight how peace and culture can coexist as tools for transformation. In alignment with Heritage Month, Ambassador Lerato encouraged students to explore both their tribal identities and global cultures, creating a unique cross-cultural experience.
Students were grouped into mixed teams of twenty, each representing different tribes and international nations; for instance, Zulu tribes represented Australia, while Sotho tribes embodied Nepal.
This creative exchange pushed participants to learn about the traditions and histories of new countries while proudly showcasing their South African roots, proving that unity can flourish through curiosity, respect, and teamwork.
Beyond cultural learning, the event promoted peace education, focusing on social issues affecting youth within their communities. Through interactive sessions, learners explored how peace begins with dialogue, understanding, and empathy.
Students expressed their reflections through dances, poetry, and drama, using art as a language of harmony. Their enthusiasm transformed the school into a living celebration of collaboration and coexistence.
To acknowledge the efforts and creativity of the participants, prizes were awarded to the most enthusiastic groups, while all students from Grade 6 to Grade 10 received certificates of participation.
Ambassador Lerato remarked on the power of the initiative, stating:
“It was heartwarming to see how students united beyond their tribal lines, embracing both global understanding and their own heritage. They truly embodied the spirit of peace through cultural exchange.”
Continuing her mission, Ambassador Lerato also led a graduation ceremony for Grade R learners and parents, where she introduced the concept of leadership and peacebuilding at an early age. On behalf of Global Peace Chain and the United Nations, she inspired families to recognize their vital role in cultivating peace within homes and communities.
The ceremony served as a reminder that leadership and peace advocacy begin with education, even in the youngest minds.
Through initiatives like these, Global Peace Chain continues to build bridges across cultures and generations. Ambassador Lerato’s ongoing commitment reflects GPC’s core mission of empowering youth, fostering dialogue, and nurturing global peacebuilders who lead with empathy and understanding.
