Adeyemi, Shukurat Feranmi is a First Class Graduate of English from Lagos State University. Prior to my admission to the University, I was appointed as the Health Prefect Girl since my days in JSS 2, the first ever in the history of the school to be a Prefect in JSS2. Following that, I emerged as the Social Prefect Girl in 2015 and was awarded as the Best Outgoing Prefect during my graduation with a number of scholarships.
I gained a scholarship to Precix Telecommunications Company where I was trained in computer programming and aviation. At the end of the training, I emerged as the Best Graduating Student in a class of more than a thousand students. Subsequently, I gained another scholarship to study in Germany. I gained admission to study International Relations in Inceberg Coast International TechnoScience Institute, Germany.
In 2017, I gained admission to study English language in Lagos State University. Upon my admission, I distinguished myself as a diligent and excellent student engaged in many extracurricular activities. I was appointed as the first General Secretary of INGENIOUS WEPOLIT SOCIETY, the official writing society of the University. Furthermore, I was elected as the General Secretary of LASU DEBATE SOCIETY, the official public speaking society of the University.
In INGENIOUS WEPOLIT SOCIETY where I served as the first and pioneer Secretary of the society, I trained many undergraduates in essay writing, poetry, creativity, English grammar, punctuation, writing rules, etc. I was the one who registered and made the society known to the University management. With my commendable service, I was awarded an Extraordinary Leader of the association.
Furthermore, in LASU DEBATE SOCIETY, I trained many people within and outside the university in the art of public speaking and debating. Moreover, I and other executive members organised the second edition of the biggest public speaking event in Nigeria tagged, LISTEN’21, where we invited speakers such as Shaffy Bello, Samuel Ajibola Spiff, Rotimi Salami, Ruby Akubueze among many other important personalities who graced the event with their presence. At the end of the administration, I was awarded as the Most Outstanding Executive of LASU DEBATE SOCIETY.
In December 2019, I was awarded as the Most Diligent Student of the Year and the Bookworm of the Year by National Association of Students of English and Literary Studies (NASELS) LASU; and in February 2020, I represented Lagos State University in a Southwestern conference debate competition and I emerged as the WINNER of WESTCOSELS CONFERENCE INTERVARSITY DEBATE COMPETITION. I defeated representatives from other universities in Southwest Nigeria. There, I was awarded the WINNER of the debate, the Best Speaker of the debate, the Best Speech Presenter and the Member of the Best Team, getting four awards out of five in the Southwest Intervarsity Debate Competition.
Following that, I was appointed by the Regional Director of NASELS Southwest Nigeria as the Chief Press Secretary of the Region. Working closely with the Regional Director, I organised the first leadership training and essay competition for students of English is Southwest Nigeria. Again, the administration organised the annual biggest conference of all students of English in the Southwest where I was awarded as the Outstanding Leader of NASELS Southwest Nigeria. Upon leaving that position, I contested for the position of the Deputy Regional Director of the same organisation and I won. I was the first female to serve as the Acting Regional Director of NASELS Southwest Nigeria and at the end of the administration, I was awarded as the Most Outstanding Regional Executive.
Furthermore, I was appointed as an Honourable Member of my department by the first female Speaker. In 2021, I got the Award of the Academic Star of my department following my brilliance, diligence and intelligence shown towards my academics. With this, I was well known as the Departmental and University Scholar. Also in March 2021, my team and I represented Lagos State University in NANS Intertertiary Debate Competition and we emerged as the Winner of the Debate, defeating 30 tertiary institutions in Southwest Nigeria. With my impact and influence in Lagos State University, I emerged as One of the 100 Most Influential LASUITES in 2021.
At the latter part of 2021, I was appointed as the Lead Tutor of Young Grammarians Hub by the Founder of the Club, Dr Ganiu Abisoye Bamgbose, where I tutored people on the basic and complex grammar of English Language. I co-founded Literary Voice Club with the President of my Department to help students in the department hone and develop their skills in listening, speaking, reading and writing. Additionally, I worked as the Presenter of Campus Biz and Lecturers’ Hangout on LASU TV. I also worked as the Presenter of Shopping Right Segment for the program called Women’s World showed on SilverBird TV every Tuesday.
Expanding the horizon of the four walls of the university, I have worked as the secretary, content developer, editor and presenter with several organisations such as Plan B Wellness Company, AkinTeachesEnglish, Opera News, SMPN News, Branding the Future, Women’s World TV Show, etc.
I have volunteered for organisations such as TEDxLASU, AkinTeachesEnglish, Child’s Right Radio, Excel Minds Academic Group (EMAG), etc. In EMAG, I volunteered as a Resource Person creating 1,000 English and literature questions and curriculum for secondary school students in Lagos State. In AkinTeachesEnglish, I published several articles on English language grammar and diction. In Child’s Right Radio, I worked as the Presenter for Child’s News all over the world.
Moreover, I had carried out projects that helped in empowering females. Due to the societal impression that females should be marginalized and should not take leadership positions, I positioned myself perfectly by correcting the notion and becoming the first female Regional Director of National Association of Students of English and Literary Studies in Southwest Nigeria in 2021 where I was awarded as the Outstanding Leader and the Outstanding Executive. Subsequently, I am known as a Woman Leader, and I organised enlightening programmes and also mentor other females in fighting for their rights and taking up responsibilities.
In addition, I worked as a TV presenter for a show called Women’s World on SilverBird TV. The program tells women’s stories, shows them where and how to do things right and it also empowers a woman every week. I had also volunteered for a number of women projects for non-governmental organizations. For instance, I hosted the first edition of Women Leadership Forum on campus where Honourable Macaulay Alli was the speaker of the event and other distinguished female leaders on a panel session.
I shattered a 35-year academic record by graduating with a First Class and earned the title of the Best Graduating Student in the Department of English, Lagos State University. I published a book on academic excellence that impacted 1,020 young people in Nigeria. Some of my Awards include:
