Mutale Chewe

Zambia

Mutale is currently reading for a Master of Philosophy in Economics as a Rhodes Scholar. She graduated top of her cohort at the University of Surrey with a BSc in Economics and Finance and was the 2018 School of Economics Valedictorian. Motivated by her desire to play a part in policy, she chose to take extra courses in Mandarin, Sustainability and Public Management as she understood that being a policy-maker requires a multi-faceted approach on matters. Her course in Public Management and Governance was facilitated by the Young African Leadership Leaders’ Initiative (YALI) at the University of South Africa.

Committed to ensuring that poverty and inequality reduce through effective economic management and a greater emphasis on education, she believes that the key to development is the strengthening of institutions through the law. As a Global Peace Chain Ambassador, she hopes to steer a shift in mindset and the way things are done, in a peaceful way. Understanding that economic injustice breeds contention, she is committed to playing a role in tackling the various economic problems that Zambia has. For her dissertation, she is looking at using a quantitative model (DSGE model) to be able to see how best Zambia can allocate is expenditure. International institutions are turning to more quantitative approaches of field-testing the effectiveness of aid and other tools for development; hence, she sees the importance of building the skillset of advanced modelling and hopefully transferring it to fellow Zambians, especially women. Mutale is thrilled at the prospect of engaging with like-minded youths to be able to see the UN SDGs implemented in Zambia via the Global Peace Chain.

She has internship experience in finance both in the United Kingdom (at J.P Morgan and Barclays Investment Bank) and Zambia (EY and KPMG, where she specialised in tax at a time when Zambia was experiencing major changes in its tax regime). Mutale has also interned at University of Lusaka, Spar Zambia and Lewis Nathan Advocates (a law firm in Zambia). Her voluntary work is motivated by her desire to give back and she has been involved in community service for the last ten years. With her Christian faith shaping her values, Mutale is passionate about empowering people to achieve their full potential. She has also held positions of responsibility as a mentor, course representative and student faculty helper.
