Sérgio dos Céus Nelson

Mozambique

My name is Sérgio dos Céus Nelson. From Maxixe (Inhambane), I was born on January 23, 1994. From an early age I dreamed that it was possible to follow my dreams and help other young people like myself not to give up on their dreams, because no one was born to fail – we can all be architects of our dreams and fight for something that we truly believe is our greatest goal in life. I’m Living in Nampula.
Graduated in Journalism, I am currently a Law Student at the Catholic University of Mozambique (UCM). It is a contest that I have always dreamed of following, mainly because it will give me technical skills to deal with my activities in relation to the environment and human rights.
In 2015 I had an Honorable Mention in the International Journalism Prize on Human Rights, by the Association of Public Defenders of the State of Rio Grande do Sul (Brazil). At the time I did a report on domestic violence and was the only African journalist selected for the International contest.
Recently I was a keynote speaker at a lecture on “Responsible Leadership: Transparency and Good Governance” at the Catholic University of Angola (Luanda). In the same period, I was a speaker at Agostinho Neto University (Angola), where I spoke about the curricula in African universities, a topic that has to do with the need for better education.
In 2016 I was fortunate to be one of the first young people to gain the opportunity to be trained at YALI, in Maputo, having registered for “Public Administration”, a course that allowed me to produce texts that were debated and at the time I proposed a model ( Growing) to improve our public activities.
In 2014 I founded the Association of Environmental and Human Rights Journalists (AJADH), officialized in 2016. From 2016 we participated in various environmental and human rights activities. In 2016 I received an invitation from the Ministry of Land and Rural Development (MITADER) to participate in a clean-up campaign and I was on the spot, working closely with the Minister. In 2015 I organized a debate on “Human Rights in Mozambique: What perspectives?” At the School of Communication and Arts (ECA).

My goal was to challenge the academy and social community to debate the real social problems that have undermined individual rights. AJADH is an association that is already connected with several national and international organizations. We are currently organizing an International workshop (in Maputo) and a debate on human rights (in Nampula). We have campaigned for environmental awareness and debates on human rights. We have worked with rural communities and will, in the near future, launch a news application. At the moment we have in the association researchers and professionals from Mozambique, Brazil, Angola, New York, Lusaka (Zambia) and London. We are also connected with several international platforms and networks that work on human rights and the environment. We have recently started working with the community of Natikiri (Nampula), where we have chosen a school in which we are going to implement a project entitled “A School of Human Rights”. The project hopes to draw everyone’s attention to preserving children’s rights. We are also developing a survey on the quality of water consumed in the district of Rapale (Nampula) and we will be able to announce the results soon.
We are going to launch in the near future a campaign against poaching, as a way to eliminate animal slaughter and conserve the environment that should be considered a concern of all.
I recently had the invitation (still under discussion) to be a Member of the World Youth Parliament for Water (WYPW) and I am currently part of a research team in Nampula and is currently investing in a survey on citizens access to law . In this sense, we are still in the process of organizing a debate “From Access to the Right to the Limits of Mozambican Justice”, a debate that we hope to reap results in order to proceed with our research.
